OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN SEXUAL HEALTH
ASSOCIATION REGARDING SEXUALITY
As a representative organization on sexual health and sexual rights in South Africa,
SASHA is represented through it’s members belonging to the medical and medical allied
professions, we support and promote the sexual rights of all, as defined through the
declaration of sexual rights from the World Association of Sexual Health (WAS) and the
World Health Organization (WHO).
It states inter alia some of the following which is further explained in the documents from
WAS: SASHA believes that:
- Sexual rights are grounded in universal human rights that are already recognized
in international and regional human rights documents.
- It reaffirms that sexuality is a central aspect of being human throughout life,
encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure,
intimacy and reproduction.
- Equality and non discrimination are foundational to all human rights protection
and promotion and include the prohibition of any distinction, exclusion or restriction on
the basis of race, ethnicity, color, sex, language, religion, political or any other opinion,
national or social origin, property, birth or other status, including disability, age,
nationality, marital and family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, health
status, place of residence, economic and social situation.
SASHA distances itself from statements made by non-scientists, including so
called behavioral laymen and one sided statements, which are unscientific
expressions of own beliefs, grounded in unproven exclamations and verbal
statements concerning the development of human sexuality.
